The Navy is taking on a new role as Amazon’s driver service provider.
Navy leaders say Amazon is the best candidate for a large portion of the work force, but some defense contractors have expressed concerns about the size and the type of work that Amazon is doing.
In a report released Thursday, the Navy’s Joint Requirements Oversight Council said the Navy would be better served by outsourcing its driver workforce to Amazon.
The council was formed in 2016 to oversee the Pentagon’s logistics and security functions.
Amazon currently has more than 4,000 employees in the U.S., and the company has a fleet of around 200,000 vehicles and trucks.
It’s also a leading supplier of cloud computing services and other technologies for military and government organizations.
The Navy has hired thousands of people in the past five years, the council said.
A Navy spokesperson said in an email that Amazon would be one of the “largest single customer customers” of the Navy fleet.
It said Amazon was “well-positioned” to compete with other cloud providers, such as Microsoft, Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure.
It said the Pentagon would continue to explore the value Amazon brings to the Navy and the Defense Department.
The council also cited Amazon’s “high-quality, scalable and cost-effective customer support and technical assistance.”
It said the service would provide “services that support Navy operations and operations-related missions, including disaster response and response to natural disasters.”
Amazon’s drivers are deployed to remote locations around the world, and they typically have a $60,000-a-year salary and a benefits package that includes health insurance, health insurance coverage for spouses and dependent children, 401(k) plans, 401K retirement plans and other benefits.
Amazon does not currently have driver contracts with the Navy.
Navy officials have said that driver training is the Navy mission, but the council’s report said it could be Amazon’s opportunity to get ahead of that.
Some defense contractors also have expressed concern about the impact that Amazon’s work force would have on the Navy if it were to become the service provider for Amazon’s fleet of vehicles and other equipment.
One defense contractor, Northrop Grumman, is among the defense contractors that have expressed reservations about Amazon.
In a letter sent to the council, the company wrote that it has “serious concerns” about the potential loss of “significant benefits” from Amazon’s presence in the Navy service force.
Amazon is also a potential threat to Northrop’s business, the letter said.
