According to the report by CareerBuilder, tech jobs are increasingly available for part-timers and temporary employees, but for many it may not be possible to keep the position for long.
“There are a lot of opportunities that are available for the part-timer, temporary, part-day, hourly and full-time worker,” says CareerBuilder CEO Dan Koester.
“The trend is for more part- and part-hour workers to become more popular,” he adds.
“In addition, a lot more people are starting to look for full- time work, or a full-year position.”
Koester says it is difficult for employers to keep their employees happy with a reduced pay and benefits package, while also providing opportunities for employees to travel to new locations.
“Part-time workers often have higher turnover rates and lower productivity,” he says.
“When you have part- time workers, it makes it hard to keep them on for long periods of time.”
When you lose a full time employee, you lose your ability to recruit and retain a new part- or full-timer,” Koesters says.”
It is not just part-days that are under threat, but also part-hours and full hours.
“Koeester says the unemployment rate for part time workers is currently 9.3 per cent, compared to 8.6 per cent for full time workers.
The number of part–time and part day workers in Australia has increased by almost a quarter in the past year.
According the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data, the number of people working part time has increased to 1.6 million, while the number working full time has grown by more than half to 1,622,000.
The average hourly wage for part and full time employees in Australia in June 2017 was $20.20.
In July, the median wage for full and part time employees was $23.70.
According Koeseter, the rising number of temporary workers in the tech industry is also contributing to the trend.”
They are less well compensated for their work, and they are not getting the full benefits package,” he explains.”
Temporary workers are the people who are often left out when they are looking for full or part-year employment.
“If they lose their job, it is very difficult for them to find a new job.”
According to CareerBuilder’s 2016 annual report, only 6 per cent of tech job postings went to part-tiers and only 14 per cent went to temporary employees.
“We expect that as part-term workers are able to move to full- or part day jobs, they will increasingly be the ones filling the void in the labour market,” Koeesters says, adding that this trend will impact the economy for years to come.
“More and more people will be moving to full time jobs, but they will be less likely to have the opportunity to keep those jobs.”
According the report, there is an increasing trend of part and part workers in employment, but the problem is getting worse.
The BLS report found that a quarter of the 1.5 million people who were employed part time in the last year were still employed full time in 2016.
The report also found that part-and-half workers, who made up 22 per cent (about 6,000) of all part-T and part hours workers, had the lowest job-seeking rate, at 12.4 per cent.
The unemployment rate among part- hours workers was 12.5 per cent in June, compared with 14.6 percent for full hours workers.
“People who are part-, part, or full time tend to have lower job-seekers rates,” Kiester says.
The Bureau of Employment and Training says that the job market is strong for part T and part days workers, but it is not enough for those looking for part or fulltime work.
“A part-or-full-time employee needs to have some kind of training and experience before they are able find a job,” says the agency’s assistant chief economist, Jo-Ellen Lutz.
“To get the most out of the job, they need to have experience in the field and some level of knowledge and skills,” she adds.
According Lutz, part time jobs can be beneficial to those with limited time, such as part time school teachers, nurses, home health aides, or retail workers.
